I am a big lover of crystals – their energy stimulates, calms and empowers me. I use them during Reiki, meditation, in circles, for readings and gridding my abode.
But did you know that when you get your beautiful, shiny (some not so shiny) new bobble of joy, that it may not be ready for you to use? Crystals should always be cleansed, cleared and then charged with intention to get the maximum of their earthly gifts. You need to remove any negative energy that may have attached itself from the previous owner. Lots of people sell crystals and stones – and they will encourage we “metaphysical peeps”, to buy them with buzz words they know we will be looking for – but that doesn’t mean they come to you “ready to go”.
There are so many ways to do this and it all depends on the crystal… Should I use water? (most you can if they have a hardness of more than 7). Should I use sea salt?, What about salt and water mixed together? How about sunshine? Maybe the moon? Saging/Smudging? Reiki? There are crystals that should never touch water or they will dissolve (selenite anyone?). There are crystals that react negatively with salt (not my lapis lazuli!!!!). Others may fade in sun light. So it is always good practice to check the best way to cleanse your little precious lovelies. Google it – it’s out there.
I am going to share with you what I do. You are welcome to give it a try.
First off I ALWAYS use one of my favorite pendulums to check what is needed.
I hold my crystal in my hand and ask … does this crystal need to be cleansed and or cleared of negative energy? If the answer is YES – then it’s time to get busy. You will more than likely get a “yes” answer (about 90% of the time) unless you have made your purchase from someone you trust and know has cleansed them for you.
Because I am a Reiki Master, I use Reiki most the time. But it really doesn’t matter what level of Reiki you are – you can use Cho-Ku-Rei to get that energy flowing and then just do what comes naturally. I continue the flow until intuitively I sense they have been cleared and cleansed. There are other times (when I have time to let the crystals sit) I use a special wooden box designated for cleansing. I put a piece of kyanite and selenite, as these crystals are self cleansing and self charging, in the box and then place the crystals I want cleansed in with them, shut the lid and don’t revisit them for at least 24 hours. You can include clear quartz and sometimes citrine – although you may have to cleanse the citrine and quartz after cleansing your new ones – so why not make it easy on yourself and leave those out? In the past I have also used sea salt, which is a great cleansing agent for a large number of crystals – but I will include a few fresh rose petals or some dried lavender buds with the salt. Why? It feels right to me. I don’t use salt as often anymore.
Next – in either situation, I recheck with my pendulum. I ask, are these crystals/stones now fully cleansed and cleared of any negative energy? If the answer is NO – then I repeat the above process (it’s like shampooing, lather, rinse, repeat). But if the answer is YES – then they are ready for me to charge them with intention of their use.
Charging with intention. You should always find out what properties your crystal naturally carries and then use that as a guide of what energy you would like set for you. For instance rose quartz, this pretty soft pink stone is perfect for self love, love of others, compassion, family, stress relief and so much more. So to charge a rose quartz hold it between your hands (Reiki practitioner or not), take a few deep breaths, relax, ask for guidance and then say, “I charge this crystal to provide loving energy for myself and others”. Hold that crystal and sit with that intention for a bit. Again I use my intuitive energy to tell me when I sense that the crystal is ready. You could add or change what you might want of the rose quartz, but you get the idea.
Then of course, I follow-up one last time with my pendulum. I ask, “has this crystal been fully charged with the intentions that I am wanting and needing?”. I have yet to have it tell me NO, but it could happen (maybe you didn’t sit long enough with it) – if so, go back and sit with intention a little longer. Once I have a YES answer – I know my crystal is ready for use.
I hope this is helpful to you. Below are a few books I would recommend regarding crystal properties and what you should and shouldn’t use to cleanse them.
Blessings and enjoy the crystal energy!
